“Become a Reviewer in Residence at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art (NGCA) in Sunderland!”

“Reviewers in Residence at NGCA will get a unique chance to take part in a series of review writing workshops linked to NGCA’s upcoming exhibition Baldock Pope Zahle.  The workshops are aimed at young writers/artists (aged 15-23 and based in the North of England) who want to gain more confidence or experience in writing about or reviewing contemporary art exhibitions (which, let’s face it, can be a bit baffling!)  Each session will be led by a local writer and will be approached from a different angle, providing a range of strategies to get you started, and top tips from the pros.

“The NGCA’s curator George Vasey will lead the first session and will also give a tour of the exhibition.  George has written extensively for a range of art magazines and will begin by looking at collaborative review writing.  Other workshop themes will include approaches to writing based upon personal experience, fictive responses to artworks and using creative writing techniques as a starting point for thinking and writing about art.

“The five sessions will culminate in the production of a zine (a.k.a. a mini magazine), using work made during each session, and all participants will be given a copy of the final publication.  Reviews will also be published on our very own Cuckoo Review.”
